A Life of Invention: Nicholas Bredimus

A major change in hospitality and airline travel was triggered by Nicholas Bredimus, who combined them with the computer software world to develop new procedures. He has worked on initiatives ranging from creating time-saving computer programs to increasing aircraft safety and designing upmarket homes. Anyone could have anticipated, however, that given his pedigree he was always likely to rise to the top. His kindred traces its roots all the way to the era of Rome and can boast of a broad mix of nationalities. The maternal line comes out of Scotland and Germany. The paternal line, however, has its roots in Luxembourg and England, from where they ultimately came to the U.S. in the late 1800s. That remarkable zeal prevailed on arrival in the United States. Nicholas, who would grow up with his six siblings, was a child of a father employed as a mechanical design engineer and his wife, a practicing nurse. He settled for a time in Texas, Kansas City, Arizona and a place called Reston in Virginia.

Once his education had been completed, he found himself in some very prominent roles with several of the most important airline companies. Hughes Airwest, Republic Airlines, Trans World Airlines (TWA) — these firms would all at different times respectively appoint him as a vice president. Most noteworthy, though, was his role as a visionary programmer working with the airline industry. Bredimus is probably most recognized for the airplane maintenance management program he created for US Airways, destined to become an “old reliable” for aircraft maintenance. And yet this stands as only one of his major designs for the hotel business. The reservation programs he invented are on their way to becoming as commonly used as the aforementioned software, while his room booking program enabled many major market players in the hotel industry to switch over to the world’s first PC based technology. For an encore came QuikTix, an automated, networked approach to selling tickets that stands as a first. Mr Bredimus has served in quite a number of positions outside of software development, it should be mentioned. Responsible positions with American Express and American Airlines were to come, and of course he founded a company of his own seventeen years ago.

At the time of writing, though, Mr Nicholas Bredimus has withdrawn from his airline connections and from coding, though rest assured he’s still making the most of his abilities. His interest now is with the architectural matters bound up in the development of environmentally safe, technologically advanced top quality houses.
